Ten

Sunset in the VisayasI’m building castles

In the sand

Like I’m a little girl

Again

/

I swim forth

Without looking back,

Trusting warm, silky waves

Again

/

I sit and stare

At sunset lights

Dancing with the moon

Into the night

/

And it’s as if

I never left,

And never aged,

And never died

/

Nine quiet deaths

/

I’m building castles

In the sand,

With dry old hands,

And a dry old heart

/

I swim forth

Without looking back,

Knowing the hells

I leave behind

/

I sit and stare

At sunset lights

That fade the way

All fades away

/

It feels like I’ve

Been gone forever,

And like I didn’t

Quite make it back

/

This – tenth – time

    1. I think, it’s about doing the same things over and over again but thinking and feeling about them differently. There’s little new to do for most of us – just different ways of perceiving what we do.
      Thank you for reading!

    1. Clouds, sand, brick – all perishable, but we are, too, so it’s ok.
For instance, I am now on a small island that was completely destroyed by a typhoon last year. You can still see the signs of the past disaster, but most of the infrastructure has been rebuilt. Typhoons come here often, the locals know it, but they stay and rebuild every time, and hope for the best – every time. I guess, it’s just what we do as humans.
Thanks for the comment, Carl! Keep that construction work going!

    1. True! The thing is, however, once you’ve grown up, it’s really hard to build the same kind of sand castle with the same kid of thoughts and feelings as one would have had as a child. The game is a lie as fragile as those sand structures themselves, and one can only believe it for a minute, if that. Weighed down by experience and memory, time is truly an irreversible thing!
Thank you for reading, as always!
