The Firebird

Along the road between past and future

If you glimpsed me run, could you tell

Whether I was still pushing forward

Or retreating under the blows of pain?

/

If you witnessed me freeze and bend double,

Burying my face in shaking hands,

Would you think I was laughing at a joke’s echo

Or weeping helplessly over a secret hurt?

/

With my feet in the air and arms outstretched,

If you saw how I leaped off the edge,

Would you choose to imagine me soaring,

Or, acknowledging gravity, falling to death?

/

You won’t know: our paths have crossed for but a moment;

Let’s say that I ran forward, that I joyfully laughed,

And when I came to the edge of the world and stepped off it,

Let’s believe that I turned

Into a firebird

Back/Forward

If I stop now,

I’ll have come here for nothing;

If I carry on,

I will be destroyed

/

And never see where ends the road

Which I was never meant to follow

Yet, I chose to, and I’m standing

By my choice;

/

Doubt and fear can halt me

For a moment only,

When, reflected in the mirror,

I see someone’s changing eyes,

/

Eyes that beg that I turn back,

While also pleading I continue

Walking on until the end,

Be it this of the road or mine;

/

It is easy to have courage

For an hour,

To speak beautifully, hope bravely

And dream of a big challenge;

/

It is harder to remain

Where and when illusions leave you:

On the side of an endless road

On a stormy day;

/

If I turn back,

I’ll have come here for nothing,

If I keep on waking,

I’ll be destroyed;

/

I look back and I look forward

Every day as I keep making

Little steps away from the chance

Of returning home

/

Because I must see the end

Of this long road

To know the reason why

It had to be walked

Lightless

The night

Is sinking

Its claws

Into my eyes

/

I fear the dark;

It keeps me

Awake

And praying to the stars

/

When they, too,

Fail me, engulfed

In clouds,

I must

/

Become a light

Unto myself;

But such a light

How could one trust?

/

A light,

That fears,

A light,

That falters

/

A light,

That only

Shines

By day

/

It will go out

If darkness only

Decides it is

A worthy prey
