To Hold

I know, you will not recognize me

For it was ages ago

That for a day we said good-bye, and

For a lifetime each other lost;

/

I wear my age upon my face now

And hunch under the weight of time,

But you are just as I recall:

As beautiful as spring in prime;

/

My dreams like autumn leaves have fallen

Upon cold ground for all to tread,

While yours, it seems to me, have blossomed

Like flowers in a fresh bouquet;

/

How you have lived I want to ask you

As in my hand I hold your hand,

And at this moment – turn back time, and

Stay by your side, which I once abandoned;

/

Then, today would we walk together,

Laughing at our private jokes?

Would my world, you, be small but happy?

Would I for you be a good home?

/

In vain I wonder, for my choices

I made a lifetime ago,

When for a day I said good-bye, and

Lost my beacon in an array of storms;

/

They left me crazy and disfigured,

They tore my flesh and broke my heart;

I cannot even recognize me

When, swiftly as they come, the hurricanes are gone;

/

You walk on by, and I’ll keep walking –

Must be, into another storm;

I wish you love, and light, and joy, and

In the lifetime to come

/

I wish to ask you how you lived and

In my hand yours again to hold

The Gift

I will show you your great courage,

I will teach you to see beauty,

I’ll gift you with a smile as bright

As the Sun’s, round whom dances the Universe;

/

But the wings I will give you will cost you your legs;

The truths I’ll share with you will be hammered like nails

Into the old, cracked, yet stubborn walls of your mind,

Built of prejudice and recycled thoughts;

/

I will grant you the Wind’s freedom,

Turn your voice into a wild Thunder;

I’ll reforge your heart into one as strong

As this of the Earth-Mother;

/

But the strength you will have will be tested each day;

The light in your eyes will draw darkness and pain,

And the love that will live in your chest must survive

The tests of indifference, of hatred, of time…

/

I offer you these gifts freely;

I offer you these burdens, heavy;

Will you take them from me bravely

Or pretend that you can’t hear me?

I thought, she said,
Since I was made of rock,
That naught existed
That was stronger than me;
/
Much time had had to pass
Before it proved me wrong,
Before the roots of trees
Which human hands had felled
/
Grew through their pain,
Forgiving what’d destroyed them,
Embracing me, whom they’d been
Killed for, as their own;
/
I thought, she said,
That I was made of stone;
I see instead
That we have all been made
Of life and boundless hope

I Remember

I recall the scent of autumn in the sky…
I remember how the wind sang of hope…
Rocks, changing their shapes in the sun…
Mountain springs, equally present and gone…
I remember how it felt
To survive;
/
On that day I was light, water and wind,
Speaking their language — body and mind,
Crying shamelessly and wildly when I
Heard them whisper: “you are not a mistake”;
I remember how it felt
To be alive;
/
I remember reaching the Earth’s
Very burning heart with my fingertips;
My eyes being one with the sun,
I could see without attachment;
I remember
Being loved
/
That day was pure joy
Beyond good and evil –
That one day
Could fill a whole life with meaning;
The day that I stepping over
Oblivion
/
And awakened
From a crumbling dream

Naive

Promise me that I will live forever –

For one long and truly happy day,

When my world, free of all sorrows,

Shall glow and

You’ll be once again in love with me

/

Promise me that I will soar forever,

Shining like a star above the sea,

My reflection dancing, and then drowning

In night waters:

Promise one last time to dance with me

/

Promise you will stay with me for good –

Until the time I close my eyes to sleep:

Whisper to my slowing heart the name

Chomolungma –

The name of my life, a lonely dream

/

When the dusk’s blue arms embrace my sun, I

Promise that I will not be afraid:

I have lived today the blissful lie called

‘Forever’ –

I won’t stay to watch it lose

Its naive face
